Additional experimental research demonstrated transmission occurring instantly between wild boars and domestic pigs (Gabriel et al., 2011). Furthermore, infection of free-ranging wild boars and deaths attributable to ASF has been observed in Russia (Gogin et al., 2013, Guinat et al., 2016). However, it’s unclear whether ASFV can be sustained in these wild populations, and persistence of ASF could also be self-limiting (Guinat et al., 2016, Lange et al., 2014).
