In 1893, the English lawyer Angelo John Lewis, writing beneath the pseudonym of Professor Hoffman, wrote a book called Puzzles Old and New. It contained, amongst other things, more than forty descriptions of puzzles with secret opening mechanisms. This book grew into a reference work for puzzle video games and was extremely popular on the time. The Tangram puzzle, initially from China, spread to Europe and America in the 19th century. Crespin allegedly stole the van, along with $6,000 value of items, whereas the worker was finishing up the purchasing journey.
