Concrete must be coated with a water-proof layer to prevent the water from breaking down the concrete, in addition to preventing contamination of the water by the concrete. Today, most aquaria encompass glass panes bonded collectively by 100 percent silicone sealant, with plastic frames hooked up to the upper and lower edges for adornment. The glass Aquarium is normal for sizes up to about 1,000 litres (260 US gal; 220 imp gal). However, glass is brittle and has little or no give before fracturing, although typically the sealant fails first.
