Even when photographers are most involved with mirroring actuality, they’re still haunted by tacit imperatives of taste and conscience. In deciding how an image should look, in preferring one publicity to another, photographers are all the time imposing requirements on their subjects. Although there is a sense in which the digital camera does certainly capture reality, not simply interpret it, pictures are as a lot an interpretation of the world as paintings and drawings are. Those events when the taking of images is comparatively undiscriminating, promiscuous, or self-effacing do not lessen the didacticism of the whole enterprise.
