Hercules Florence, a French painter and inventor living in Campinas, Brazil, used the French type of the word, photographie, in non-public notes which a Brazilian historian believes had been written in 1834. This claim is extensively reported however is not but largely recognized internationally. The first use of the word by the Franco-Brazilian inventor grew to become widely identified after the research of Boris Kossoy in 1980. The word “images” was created from the Greek roots φωτός (phōtós), genitive of φῶς (phōs), “gentle” and γραφή (graphé) “representation via strains” or “drawing”, collectively meaning “drawing with light”.
