When she speaks, he can hear in her voice that she’s been crying. “Right,” Rolph says, and the ladies fall away like the drumbeats, leaving him and his father together, an invincible unit amid the burbling, whispering bush. He thinks, I’ll keep in mind this night for the relaxation of my life.
