Clostridia are giant, spore forming, strictly anaerobic to oxygen-tolerant anaerobic bacteria. Clostridium perfringens types A and C, and C. Difficile are the principal enteric clostridial pathogens of home swine. All subtypes of C. Perfringens can be commensals in the intestines of many animal species; due to this fact, diagnosis must be made by detecting the toxin in association with constant lesions and within the absence of different potential pathogens. Multiple pulmonary granulomas are characteristic lesions in tuberculous mycobacterial infections.
