The adults are hematophagus and make the most of specialised mouthparts to stick to and cause ulceration of the small intestinal mucosa leading to enteritis and blood loss. Diagnosis is by the identification of eggs in the feces by flotation. Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative bacillus with 5 known serovars, A, B, C, D, and E. Coinfection with toxin producing strains of P. multocida and different bacterial pathogens are the cause for progressive atrophic rhinitis in domestic pigs and sporadic outbreaks of septicemia can happen.
