Gross lesions may be restricted to poor physique condition or emaciation, splenomegaly, and hepatomegaly, with or without polycavitary effusion, and multisystemic hemorrhages.
Microscopic lesions reflect hemolytic illness with hemoglobin nephrosis, and degeneration and necrosis with a sample suggestive of hypoxia in multiple tissues. Diagnosis is based on identification of the parasite in erythrocytes. Gibsoni-like organisms have been detected by PCR in wild boar in Asia, but have not yet been linked to disease (Masatani et al., 2017). The life cycle for each is indirect and they make the most of an arthropod intermediate host . Hyostrongylus burrows into the abdomen wall inflicting ulceration and gastric nodules with elevated mucus production whereas Ascarops causes a catarrhal gastritis.
